Loose Joints is honored to present Painted Frames, a little-known body of work by the late Malick Sidibé.

Known as ‘the Eye of Bamako,’ Sidibé documented the lives, styles, and energy of people in post-independence Mali with unparalleled intimacy. From the euphoria of youth in Bamako’s dancehalls to the confident poses of subjects in his studio, his iconic black and white photographs capture a nation seeking to define itself during a period of immense social and cultural transformation.

Painted Frames offers a fresh reinterpretation of this legacy, fusing Sidibé’s emblematic portraits with vibrant, hand-painted frames created in collaboration with him and local Malian artisans in his later years. These frames were more than mere decoration; they were commemorative pieces, practical objects gifted, circulated, treasured, and shared as tokens of status. They reflected the joy, pride, and self-expression of his subjects, reminding us that Sidibé’s photography was, first and foremost, a social practice. His work consistently celebrated the interconnectedness of African people, culture, and identity.

This late series highlights Sidibé’s consistent commitment to celebrating Malian cultural modernity.
