A monograph of Swiss artist Urs Fischer and simultaneously a feverish, dream-like, visual stream of consciousness. Known for his large-scale and often ephemeral sculptures made from wax, bread, fruit, and garbage, Fischer’s work challenges notions of permanence, beauty, and value. This book, too, mirrors his process, densely collaging iPhone photographs, installation shots, personal notes, studio fragments, and unfinished sketches. More than just a catalog, it’s a “brain dump” of raw material obsession and visual storytelling.

Urs Fischer

Swiss artist Urs Fischer, born in 1973, has been active since the 1990s. At his stunning retrospective at LA MOCA, he created giant holes in the walls and, along with 1,500 amateurs, crafted countless figurative works of all sizes from grey clay. Furthermore, he has arranged plastic skeletons on furniture and washing machines, built decaying orange fairytale-like cabins, sculpted blue raindrops, hung large mirrors, and presented collage works he calls “problem paintings” using a diverse range of materials that cannot be fully captured in photographs or words. While many of them are grey, all are as vibrant and provocative as the work of a child prodigy, which, of course, can only be achieved by "an adult who is like a child prodigy."
